The UK just officially posted positive GDP figures for the last quarter of 2009 thereby signalling an exit from the longest recession on record. Phew! With most European economies having returned to positive growth following their recessionary periods, it is of no surprise that we are beginning to see an increasing number of companies seeking to capitalise on this. Certainly, in the last quarter of 2009, we began to see a clear indication that confidence is beginning to creep back into the recruitment market.
One noticeable trend has been the increasing number of companies who are seeking to expand their presence across mainland Europe. Considering many major economies returned to growth in the summer of 2009, these markets offer a true and present opportunity for attracting business. Indeed, it has recently been reported that if the UK seeks to propel its economic recovery, then exporting our goods and services offers the best chance of this. A competitive edge is there to be gained by successfully tapping into these markets.
On a related (and longer term) note, if UK companies do seek to follow a route into overseas markets then surely a concerted effort needs to be made to ensure learning a language is made compulsory within schools? Having a skilled workforce who can compete within an ever increasingly global marketplace is vital to any economy. Maybe languages won’t be classed as “nice to have”, “advantageous” or “desirable” for much longer….
So all in all, it will be interesting to see what patterns emerge over the coming months. With a hectic 12 months behind us, let’s hope 2010 brings more stability, prosperity and growth. Especially for all those that seek further opportunity.

It’s been exactly two years since the Credit Crunch began to cause turmoil to financial markets and, in turn, the global economy. Whilst no-one really predicted the scale of this downturn and it’s still early days to say we’re out of the woods yet, there are further positive signals to be heard. For example, figures from the US released last week showed a less than expected decline in growth. With the US economy still being the barometer for all others to follow, could we be seeing the recession (as per definition) coming to an end?

So this does raise the question of what happens when the recession is officially classed as over? Are people going to pick up the national newspapers with the “Recession is Over!” headlines and decide to book themselves a luxury holiday? Probably not, but there may well be a psychological boost in knowing that the worst has passed.

How are business owners going to react? Many would have been running firms, which as a result of the recession have had to become more streamlined in order to sustain their existence. Business models may have had to be changed to adapt to their respective market. Has the credit crunch been a lesson in business you never expected to take? I can raise my hand and say it has!

Following these lessons, where does this leave an organisations’ workforce? In many cases, shedding staff doesn’t mean their tasks completely disappear. More responsibility and workload gets spread around less people. Post-recession, will employees still be as willing to take on more work without the extra perks? Sooner or later, as growth comes back to the markets, companies will begin to recognise that the time has come to hire new recruits.

My thoughts are that initially these vacancies will be for roles that have a specific need and would bolster the existing workforce. Maybe when growth is more prominent, we would see further opportunities arise which would allow companies to capitalise on this. Either way, timing is crucial and being able to keep ahead of the competition is a key factor. Probably some of the few things to not have changed in the last two years!

With the relentless (although reducing) news of shrinking economies and contracting growth, it’s been refreshing to read about a completely opposite situation. The British Chamber of Commerce have produced some interesting information which is designed to encourage firms to consider looking farther afield for their business.

The UK is the second largest exporter of services in the world, yet there are still many companies here who have not yet explored international markets. Undoubtedly, there are many factors to consider choosing to expand in such a way, but I can think of several reasons why UK companies hold a major advantage if they seek to export their services.

1. The UK, and London in particular, has a strong and established multicultural and multilingual workforce.
2. Independent bodies offer support and assistance to companies exploring international opportunities.
3. Exporting is a chance to gain the edge over your competitors.

It would seem that exporting could be an option regardless of the market sector. We are even seeing football teams make a concerted effort to setup international bases. OK – I’m slightly biased by including this link about Liverpool Football Club choosing to start a new academy in India, but couldn’t resist!

Who was it that said a week was a long time in politics? We’ve had MP’s ludicrous expense claims exposed, the highest rise in UK unemployment figures since 1981 and to top it all off, Jordan and Peter Andre have decided to separate! You couldn’t blame anyone for thinking that 2009 is just a continuation of the doom and gloom of 2008. But there is hope! So where is the silver lining to these pieces of depressing news?

Well, while MP’s are clamouring to write out cheques to pay back their expenses and readership of Hello and OK magazines goes through the roof, we are also seeing signs of a consolidation in the temporary job market. With a tough first quarter of the year out of the way, there seems to be a steady and noticeable increased amount of confidence amongst some companies in recruiting temporary and contract staff.

Obviously, it’s still very early days and there’s undoubtedly some rough water ahead, but this crumb of comfort should be taken for what it is. Positive news. Anyone seen my copy of Hello?!

The obvious and simplistic answer is for the agency to get them a job. This is true in many respects, ultimately this element is the main aspect of any recruitment agencies’ business. However, within the competitive market in which we operate, there must be scope for improving services offered.

A sad fact at the moment is that there are many people facing redundancy. Who can offer them support and guidance in seeking their next job? I would imagine that a significant proportion of these people have not actively sought a job in a long time. So where do they begin?

An updated CV is the first thought. Registering with agencies must be high up on the list too. Maybe approaching employers directly? Always an option, but can be difficult to make contact with the right person at the right time.

Would really like to hear what job seekers out there feel where they could be better served by recruitment agencies in helping them find a job.
